How To Treat Rabies In Humans

Rabies is a disease caused by the rabies virus transmitted through the bite of infected animals, such as dogs, cats, or other wild animals. After being infected, this virus spreads through the nervous system to the brain and causes serious inflammation of the brain. Unfortunately, rabies are generally fatal after symptoms appear. Therefore, prevention is an important key in dealing with rabies.

If you are bitten or exposed to animals suspected of being infected with rabies, here are the actions that should be taken:

1. Wash the wound with soap and water: Clean the bite wound with soap and running water for 15 minutes. This helps eliminate most of the virus from the wound.

2. Visit the doctor immediately: After being exposed to animals suspected of being infected with rabies, immediately see a doctor. The doctor will evaluate your level of risk and can provide the necessary immunization.

3. Passive immunization: The doctor may give an injection of immunoglobulin rabies (rig) around the bite wound or other exposed area. Rig contains antibodies that can help fight the rabies virus.

4. Active Immunization: You will be given a rabies vaccine. Usually, this vaccine is given as many as five doses for several weeks, namely on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 after being exposed.

In addition to the above medical measures, there are several precautions that can be taken to avoid exposure to rabies:

1. Avoid contact with wild animals or unknown animals. Do not touch or play with animals that look sick or problematic.

2. Pet Vaccination: Make sure your pet, such as dogs and cats, get a regular rabies vaccine according to the schedule determined by the veterinarian.

3. Report Animal Bite: If you are bitten by an animal, immediately report the incident to the local health authority. Inform the details about the animals involved, if possible, to help take the necessary actions.

Remember that prevention is the best step to avoid rabies. Stay alert to wild animals or unknown, pet vaccination, and immediately seek medical treatment after exposed to animals suspected of being infected with rabies.
